Robert William ANDERSON, son of Robert ANDERSON (c. 1861- ) and Frances SAGE (c. 1857- ), was born on 27 August 1880 in Kenninghall, Norfolk. Robert joined the army on 26 February 1897, pronounced fit the following day, and joined the Norfolk Regiment, gunner 2427. He was re-attested in Ipswich into the Royal Artillery on 14 May 1897, ser. no. 20075, joining the following day, serving on home soil (2 years 213 days). From 13 December 1899 to 18 July 1901 he was with his company in South Africa (1 year 218 days). For 13 years 34 days (18 July 1901 to 21 August 1914) he served on home soil. He was promoted to Corporal on 9 November 1903, extending his service to 12 years on 17 March 1904. On 26 October 1908 he was promoted to Sergeant, and re-engaged at Bordon on 24 April 1909 extending his service to 21 years. He joined the British Expeditionary Force in France on 22 August 1914 serving there for 2 years 107 days returning to the U.K. on 6 December 1916 aboard the H.S. St. George (was he wounded?). He then served at home until returning to France on 6 November 1917 until 7 April 1918. On 7 November 1917 he was promoted to temporary Sergeant-Major to fill a vacancy, a week later to Troop Sergeant-Major. Returning to the U.K. till his discharge on 7 August 1919 having reached the termination of his engagement. No dates of death or burial have been found for Robert.
